Scétate – Russo-Costa 1887
Si duorme o si nun duorme, bella mia,
siente pe’ ’nu mumento chesta voce!
Chi te vo’ bene assaje sta ’miez’ ’a via
pe’ te canta’ ’na canzuncella doce…
Ma staje durmenno, nun te si’ scetata,
’sti ffenestelle nun se vonno apri’?!
È ’nu ricamo ’sta mandulinata,
Scétate bella mia, nun chi. durmi’…
’N cielo se so’ arrucchiate ciento stelle,
tutte pe’ sta’ a senti’ chesta canzone.
Aggio ’ntiso ’e parla’ li tre chiu’ belle,
dicevano: “Nce tene passione!”
E’ passione ca nun passa maje,
passa lu munno, essa nun passarra`
Tu certo a chesto nun ce penzarraje,
ma tu nasciste pe’ m’affattura’!
È ’nu ricamo ’sta mandulinata,
Scétate bella mia, nun chi. durmi’…
Wake up
Whether you’re sleeping or not, my beauty,
hark for a moment to this voice!
The man who loves you is here in the street
to sing you a sweet melody…
Why, still asleep, haven’t you woken,
won’t these little windows open for me?
’Tis a pretty tribute this mandolin air,
wake up, my beauty, sleep no more …
A hundred stars are gathered on high
all to give ear to this ditty of mine.
And I heard the three most beautiful
saying “What passion there is in this song!”
This is passion that will never fade,
the world will pass, but not this passion.
You won’t be giving it a thought,
but you were born to bewitch me!

Mare Verde
Salvatore Mazzocco – Giuseppe Marotta - 1961
Nun è campagna: è mare, è mare verde
Nu golfo d' erba, na scugliera 'e fronne
Ca luntano se perde
Sotto 'o cielo d' está...
E pe' stu mare verde senza fine
Suonno d'a vita mia,
Cchiù carnale e gentile
Tu cammine cu'mme...
L' ombra te veste ma te spoglia 'o sole
Si' d' oro comme 'o ggrano...
Tremmanno 'e passione
T' astregno sti mmane...
E 'o mare verde, ce 'ncanta e ce perde
Abbracciáte accussí...
Nu bosco dorme e canta na surgente...
Sisca nu treno sotto 'a na muntagna...
Va sbarianno cu 'o viento
Na palomma ccá e llá...
E pe' stu mare verde senza fine
Suonno d'a vita mia,
Cchiù carnale e gentile
Tu cammine cu'mme...
L' ombra te veste ma te spoglia 'o sole
Si' d' oro comme 'o ggrano...
Tremmanno 'e passione
T' astregno sti mmane...
E 'o mare verde, ce 'ncanta e ce perde
Abbracciáte accussí...
E ce perdimmo pe' stu mare verde...
Stu mare verde...

So le sorbe e le nespole amare
from “Lo cecato fauzo” Leonardo Vinci 1719
So’ le sorbe e le nespole amare,
So’ le sorbe e le nespole amare,
ma lo tiempo le fa maturare
e chi aspetta se ll’adda magnà,
se ll’adda magna’, se l’adda magnà,
se ll’adda magna’, se l’adda magnà,
So’ le sorbe e le nespole amare ,
ma lo tiempo le fa maturare
e chi aspetta se ll’adda magnà,
se ll’adda magna’, se l’adda magnà,
se ll’adda magna’, se l’adda magnà,
Accussì so’ le femmene toste,
che s’arrangiano quanno t’accuoste,
tiempo e purchie le fanno ammullà,
tiempo tiempo, purchie purchie,
tiempo e purchie le fanno ammullà
Rowanberries and loquats are bitter
Rowanberries and loquats are bitter,
But time makes it mature
And those who are waiting can eat them,
Can eat them, eat them
Can eat them, eat them.
Rowanberries and loquats are bitter,
Rowanberries and loquats are bitter,
But time makes it mature
And those who are waiting can eat them,
Can eat them, eat them
Can eat them, eat them.
So are stubborn women,
Who are racing when approaching them
Even women like these fruits over time become sweet

Presentimento
E.A.Mario 1918
pe' nun turnà cchiù a me.
E tanno mme faje chiagnere,
tanno mm'attacco a te
cchiù forte 'e ll'èllera.
Ll'èllera? E, comm'a ll'èllera,
vurrìa murì cu'tté, accussì.
E i' dico: "E' ben inutile
si è destinato già.
Core ca s'hann' 'a spàrtere
nisciuna cosa 'e ppò cchiù avvicinà".
Cchiù 'e bbraccia te 'ncatenano,
cchiù 'o core dice:"Addio".
Ah, comm'è scuro stu destino mio
pe' 'sta fatalità.
E nun te saccio dicere
pecché mm'attacco a te
cchiù forte 'e ll'èllera.
Ll'èllera? Ah, fosse ll'èllera.
Putrìa murì cu'tté, accussì.
Dimme, e si 'e ffronne tornano
ca uttombre fa cadé,
si tutto torna a nascere,
qua' primmavera ce pò stà pe'mmé?
Cchiù 'o core è stracquo 'e chiagnere,
cchiù 'nnammurato 'o sento.
Si mo ce sparte stu presentimento,
pecché mm'attacco a te?
E' ammore? E' ammore. E abbracciame,
comm'io t'abbraccio,
e sóngo peggio 'e ll'èllera.
Ll'èllera. I' sóngo ll'èllera.
Voglio murì, cu'tté, accussì.

Luna Nova
Canzone marinaresca (1887)
S. DI GIACOMO - M.P. COSTA
La luna nova ’ncopp’a lu mare
stenne ’na fascia d’argiento fino;
dint’a la varca ’nu marenare
quase s’addorme c’’a rezza ’nzino…
Nun durmi’, scètete, oje marena’,
votta ’sta rezza, penza a vuca’!
[coro] Nun durmi’, scètate, oje marena’,
votta ’sta rezza, penza a vuca’!
Dorme e suspira ’stu marenare,
se sta sunnanno la ’nnammurata…
Zitto e cuieto se sta lu mare,
pure la luna se nc’è ’ncantata…
Luna d’argiento, lass’’o sunna’,
vaselo ’nfronte nun ’o sceta’…
[coro] Luna d’argiento, lass’’o sunna’,
vaselo ’nfronte, nun ’o sceta’…
Comme a ’stu suonno de marenare
tu duorme, Napule, viata a te!…
Duorme, ma, ’nzuonno, lacreme amare
tu chiagne, Napule!… Scètete, scè’!…
Puozze ’na vota resuscita’!…
Scètete, scètete, Napule, Na!…
[coro] Puozze ’na vota resuscita’!…
Scètete, scètete, Napule, Na!…
New Moon
The new moon o’er the sea
spreads a band of fine silver,
a fisherman rests in his boat,
almost asleep, his net at his breast.
Don’t sleep, awaken, O sailor,
Set the nets and row!
[chorus] don’t sleep, awaken o sailor,
Set the nets and row!
He sleeps and sighs
and dreams of his love…
the sea is calm and quiet,
even the moon is bewitched…
Silver moon, let him dream on,
kiss his brow, do not awaken him…
[chorus] Silver moon, let him dream on,
kiss his brow, do not awaken him…
Like this sailor’s sleep
Naples, you sleep, woe unto thee!…
You sleep, O Naples, but in your slumber you
weep,
bitter tears, Naples, awake!
May you awaken!…
Awake, awake Napoli Na’!…
[chorus] May you just once awaken!…
Awake, awake, Naples, Na’!…

Rose d’’o mese ‘e Maggio
L. Ippolito, S. Mazzocco 1966
Rose d’’o mese ‘e Maggio
Passa ‘a voce de rose
‘na campana luntana
pe’ ll’aria sona.
E’ nu ricamo verde
Mmieze’ ‘e fronne co sole
Ca trasenne sti mane

E ‘o core mio sta cca
Pe muri` pe campa`
Cu te sempe cu te
Si me puo` perduna`.
Rose d’’o mese ‘e Maggio
Primmavera e` venuta
E pure io so turnato
Cu ‘a voce de rrose
Do mese e Maggio
E ‘o core mio sta cca
Pe muri` pe campa`
Cu te sempe cu te
Si me puo` perduna`.
Rose d’’o mese ‘e Maggio
Comme e` fredda sta mano
Mentre cchiu` t’alluntane

Rundinella
Galdieri, Spagnolo - 1918
Tutte ll'amice mieje sanno ca tuorne,

Só' già tre ghiuorne.
Nisciuno 'nfin'a mo s'è 'mmagginato
ca tu, crisciuta 'ncopp' 'o core mio,
mm'hê ditto addio.
E torna rundinella,
torna a stu nido mo ch'è primmavera.
I' lasso 'a porta aperta quanno è 'a sera
speranno 'e te truvà
vicino a me.
Vulanno pe' cittá nove e stramane,

E si nun truove maje chi te vò' bene
quanto te ne vogl'io
ll'amice 'o ssanno

E torna rundinella,
…………………….
Torna. Ll'amice mieje sanno ca tuorne.
Tutte se só' 'nfurmate e a tutte dico:
"Dint'a sti juorne".
Uno sultanto, era 'o cchiù buono amico,
nun ll'aggio visto e nun c'è cchiù venuto,
fosse partuto?
E torna rundinella,
Torna a stu nido mo ch’e` primmavera
Si ‘a notte pe chi sa siente nu lagno
Songo io ca chiagne
Pe te fa turna`
…………………….
All my friends know that you come back,
That you left and not that you left me
It's already three days.
No one has imagined until now
That you, grown up on my heart,
You told me: Goodbye!
And back, swallow,
Come back to this nest now that it's spring!
I leave the door open when it's evening
Hoping to find you
Close to me.
Flying for new and distant cities,
You can not know what happens to you
Today or tomorrow.
And if you never find someone who loves you
As much as I want,
Friends know it,
What are you doing flying?
And back, swallow,
Come back to this nest now that it's spring!
I leave the door open when it's evening
Hoping to find you
Close to me.
Back! My friends know that you come back.
Everyone got informed and I tell everyone:
"In these days".
Only one, he was the best friend,
I have not seen him and he has not come.
Was it a party?
And back, swallow,
Come back to this nest now that it's spring!
I leave the door open when it's evening
Hoping to find you
Close to me.

Napulitanata
Di Giacomo, Costa 1884
Uocchie de suonno, nire, appassiunate,
ca de lu mmèle la ducezza avite,
pecché, cu sti gguardate ca facite
vuje nu vrasiero 'mpietto mm'appicciate?
Ve manca la parola e mme parlate,
pare ca senza lacreme chiagnite,
de 'sta faccella janca anema site,
uocchie belle, uocchie doce, uocchie affatate.
Vuje ca 'nziem'a li sciure v'arapite
e 'nzieme cu li sciure ve 'nzerrate,
sciure de passione mme parite.
Vuje, sentimento de li 'nnammurate,
mm'avite fatto male e lu ssapite.
Uocchie de suonno, nire, appassiunate.

Serenata Napulitana
Di Giacomo – Costa 1896
Dimme, dimme a chi pienze assettata,
sola sola, addereto a ’sti lastre?…
’Nfacci’ ’o muro ’e rimpetto stampata
veco ’n’ombra e chest’ombra si’ tu…
Doc’ è ’a notte e ’na luna d’argiento
saglie ’ncielo e cchiù ghianca addeventa
e ’nu sciato ogne tanto d’o viento
pe’ chest’aria se sente ’e passa’…
Ah, che notte, che notte!…
Ma pecchè nun t’affacce?
Ma pecchè, ma pecchè me ne cacce,
Catari’ senza manco parla’?…
Ma ce sta ’nu destino,
e io ce credo e ce spero,
Catari’, nun è ’o vero: tu cuntenta nun si’!…
Catari’, Catari’ m’e lassato,
tutto ’nzieme st’ammore è fernuto,
tutto ’nzieme t’e sciveto a ’n’ato,
m’e ’nchiantato e m’e ditto “bonnì”!
E a chist’ato ca amo tu vuo’ bene,
staje penzanno e, scetata, l’aspiette;
ma chist’ato stasera nun vene,
e maie cchiù, t’o dich’io venarrà!…
No! Nun vene, nun vene…
l’aggio visto p’a strata
cammena’ core a core cu’ ‘nata
e, rerenno, parlavano ’e te…
Tu si’ stata traduta!
Tu si’ stata lassata!
Tu si’ stata ’nchiantata!
Pure tu, pure tu!…
Catari’, nun è ’o vero: tu cuntenta nun si’!…
Neapolitan serenate
Tell me, who are you thinking of, seated
all alone behind your window-panes?…
I see a shadow projected onto the wall
opposite, and you are that shadow…
The night is sweet, the silvery moon
is rising and becoming ever brighter
and every now and then I feel
a breath of wind brush past me…
Ah, what a night, what a night!…
Why don’t you come over to the window?
Why did you throw me over,
Catherine, without a word?…
But there is such a thing as fate,
and I believe in it and trust it,
Catherine, it is not true: you’re not content!…
Catherine, you discarded me,
all at once your love was ended,
as suddenly you chose another,
you ditched me and you said “goodnight”!
And now it is this other man you love,
of whom you think, for whom you watch and
wait; but he will not come to you this evening,
not ever again, believe me!…
No! He will not come…
I saw him in the street
walking with another, arms entwined
and, laughing, they were talking about you…
You have been deceived!
You have been let down!
You have been discarded!
You too, you too!…
I see a shadow projected onto the wall
opposite, and you are that shadow…
The night is sweet, the silvery moon
is rising and becoming ever brighter
and every now and then I feel
a breath of wind brush past me…
Ah, what a night, what a night!…
Why don’t you come over to the window?
Why did you throw me over,
Catherine, without a word?…
But there is such a thing as fate,
and I believe in it and trust it,
Catherine, it is not true: you’re not content!…
Catherine, you discarded me,
all at once your love was ended,
as suddenly you chose another,
you ditched me and you said “goodnight”!
And now it is this other man you love,
of whom you think, for whom you watch and

not ever again, believe me!…
No! He will not come…
I saw him in the street

You have been let down!
You have been discarded!
You too, you too!…

Era de Maggio
Di Giacomo – Costa 1885
Era de maggio e te cadeano n’zino
a schiocche a schiocche li cerase rosse,
fresca era l’aria e tutto lu ciardino
addurava de rose a ciento passe.
Era de maggio; io, no, nun me ne scordo,
’na canzona cant.vemo a doje voce…
cchi. tiempo passa e cchi. ne n’allicordo,
fresca era l’aria e la canzona doce.
E diceva: “Core, core!
core mio, luntano vaje;
tu me lasse e io conto l’ore,
chi sa quanno turnarraje!”
Rispunneva io: “Turnarraggio
quanno tornano li rose,
si ’stu sciore torna a maggio
pure a maggio io stongo cca.”.
E so’ turnato e mo’, comm’a na vota
cantammo ’nzieme la canzone antica;
passa lu tiempo e lu munno s’avota
ma ammore vero, no, nun vota viche.
De te, bellezza mia, m’annammuraje,
si t’allicuorde, ’nnanze a la funtana,
l’acqua l. dinto nun se secca maje,
e ferita d’ammore nun se sana.
Nun se sana; ca sanata
si se fosse, gioia mia,
mmiezo a st’aria mbarzamata
a guardarte io nu’ starria!
E te dico: “Core, core!
Core mio, turnato io so’,
torna maggio e torna ammore,
fa de me chello che vuo’!”
It was May
It was May and bunches of red cherries
were falling into your lap,
the air was fresh and the whole garden
and a hundred paces beyond it smelled of roses.
It was May; no, I shall never forget,
we sang a song together,
the more time passes the better I remember it,
and the air was fresh and the song very pretty.
You said: “Dear heart, dear heart,
dear heart of mine! You’re going away;
you’re leaving me to count the lonely hours,
and who knows when you’ll return!”
And I replied: “I shall return
when the roses bloom again,
like the flowers that comes again in May,
I too shall then return.”
And I returned and now, together,
we sing the same song as before;
time passes and the world changes
but true love always holds its course.
I fell in love with you, my beauty,
beside the fountain, if you remember,
its water never runs dry,
and likewise love’s wounds never heal.
They never heal; for if they did,
I should be standing here, my darling,
in this sweetly-scented garden,
looking at you!
And I say to you: “Dear heart, dear heart,
dear heart of mine! I have returned,
when May returns, then so I does love,
now do with me what you will!”

Francesco Pellegrino - Luna Nova
#LunaNova
In this new recording, I wanted to work with some of the great musicians from my formative musical life in Italy. I chose six guitarists to accompany one or more songs each. The record will be entitled, 'Luna Nova' which is the title of one of the songs on the album. I chose this title as a symbol of light in the darkness to reflect this terrible period we are experiencing; that it may soon end with a new and beautiful moon full of new dreams and good hopes.
Recorded in remote between Napoli, New York, and Toronto.
Engineered at Modica Music Studio.
Tracks 13 and 14 are from a remastered 2004 recording that was never released.
Mixed and Produced by Roberto Occhipinti
Mastered by Peter Letros
Artwork by Christophe Mourey
CD Design by Yesim Tosuner – Backyard Design.
Registrato in Remote tra Napoli, New York e Toronto
al Modica Music Studio
Le tracce 13 e 14 sono delle registrazioni rimasterizzate del 2004 mai pubblicate prima.
